Mexico Dispatches Aid Shipment to Cuba

(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that Mexico is dispatching a humanitarian aid shipment to Cuba, using the occasion to mount a pointed defense of Havana against the longstanding U.S. economic embargo.

"We are sending humanitarian aid. In fact, a ship carrying humanitarian aid is departing for Cuba today," Sheinbaum told reporters.

A Principled Stand on Sovereignty
The Mexican president cast her government's support for Cuba in ideological as well as constitutional terms, framing the assistance as an expression of Mexico's bedrock foreign policy doctrine of national self-determination — a principle with deep roots in the country's diplomatic tradition.

"Mexico will always act with fraternity and solidarity toward all the nations of the world, and particularly toward Cuba," she said. "We believe in the self-determination of peoples — a principle that is, moreover, enshrined in Mexico's Constitution."

Six Decades of Opposition to the Blockade
Sheinbaum also took direct aim at Washington's economic blockade against Cuba, tracing Mexico's rejection of the policy to its very origins during the Cold War — a stance she made clear has never wavered across successive administrations.

"We do not agree — nor have we ever agreed, from the very first moment in 1962 when the blockade was proposed — with the blockade against Cuba," she said.

The president added that Mexico would sustain its assistance to Cuba for as long as humanitarian conditions on the island demand it, signaling no intention to scale back support amid ongoing pressure from Washington.
