Peru Appoints Jose Maria Balcazar as Interim President
Balcazar, 83, secured the highest number of votes during a parliamentary session in Lima and will serve as interim leader until July 28, overseeing the nation as it prepares for presidential elections later this year. He is the eighth individual to occupy Peru’s top office in the last decade.
The previous day, lawmakers voted to censure interim President Jose Jeri, bringing his brief four-month tenure to an end. Critics argued that Jeri was unfit to manage the electoral transition and pointed to multiple ongoing corruption probes.
According to reports, Jeri faces allegations of influence peddling, including secret meetings with Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang, whose company had recently secured government approval for a large hydroelectric project. Jeri denies any misconduct.
Jeri had assumed the interim presidency last October following the ousting of Dina Boluarte, who was removed from office amid mass protests and accusations of abuse of power.
Political parties are already campaigning ahead of the July elections, though analysts warn that continued political instability may erode public confidence and hinder efforts to tackle the country’s economic and social challenges.
