Mexico Explores Ways to Resume Oil Shipments to Cuba

(MENAFN) Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that her government will pursue diplomatic channels to restore petroleum exports to Cuba despite tariff threats from Washington, while simultaneously escalating humanitarian relief efforts to the embattled island.

The Mexican president disclosed that crude deliveries have ceased following a decree by U.S. President Donald Trump imposing punitive tariffs on any nation providing oil to the Caribbean state. Her administration is now negotiating with Washington to circumvent the measures while preparing additional aid shipments.

"It is very unjust to impose sanctions on countries that sell oil to Cuba. It is very unjust and not right, because sanctions that affect the people are never right. One may agree or disagree with Cuba's system of government, but the people should never be affected," Sheinbaum stated during her Monday briefing.

The Mexican Navy delivered 814 tons of essential supplies Sunday, according to Mexico's Foreign Ministry. Two vessels transported milk, crackers, beans, rice, canned tuna, sardines, cooking oil and personal hygiene items—a response to the severed petroleum pipeline caused by Trump's executive action.

Sheinbaum condemned the economic pressure campaign against Havana, urging Washington to lift restrictions on oil commerce.

"We will continue supporting Cuba and will keep taking all the necessary diplomatic actions to restore oil shipments because you cannot strangle a people in this way. It is deeply unjust, very unjust," Sheinbaum declared.

A second relief convoy carrying over 1,500 tons of powdered milk and beans is being readied for departure as Mexico simultaneously negotiates with the Trump administration to avoid reciprocal tariffs and reinstate petroleum flows.
