Mexico Explores Ways to Assist US Oil to Cuba

(MENAFN) Mexico’s president said Friday that her government is exploring ways to assist Cuba as the Caribbean nation faces a growing humanitarian crisis following tightened US sanctions on countries supplying oil to the island.

“The application of tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba could trigger a far-reaching humanitarian crisis, directly affecting hospitals, food supplies, and other basic services for the Cuban people. This is a situation that must be avoided through respect for international law and dialogue between the parties,” she said at a news conference.

Mexico has historically provided a substantial share of Cuba’s oil, particularly after disruptions to Venezuelan supplies. Last year, the state-owned oil company supplied roughly 20,000 barrels of crude per day to Cuba, while a recent shipment in January delivered 86,000 barrels. Overall, she noted, oil exports account for about 1% of Mexico’s national output.

The president explained that her administration is reviewing the scope of the US president’s decree while searching for ways to support Cuba without exposing Mexico to sanctions. “So, I instructed the foreign minister to discuss this with the United States government, or for them to send the oil themselves. This is an issue of support for the Cuban people,” she said.

The US had declared a national emergency, citing threats from Cuba involving “hostile actors, terrorism, and regional instability that endanger American security.” The administration also claimed Cuba hosts Russia’s largest overseas signals intelligence facility and harbors transnational groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas. Under this framework, a levy was imposed on goods from nations that sell or provide oil to Cuba.

In response, the Cuban president condemned the increased US sanctions on the island, highlighting their negative impact on the country’s economy through posts on social media.
